Permitless carry is still waiting on the House.
There was no action in Raleigh this week, and that’s the story. SB 50, permitless carry, is still waiting on the House. Here’s the rest of what you need to know.
SB 50 still waits on the House
The Senate overrode the governor’s veto of SB 50 on July 29, 2025, 30 to 19. The House has never taken the override vote. SB 50 is not law, and it dies if the House doesn’t act before the session ends. That vote could be scheduled with little notice, and we’ll tell you the moment it is. Here’s the bill page.
A federal ammo bill to watch
H.R. 7166, the so called “Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act,” has more than 20 Democratic cosponsors. It hasn’t had a hearing. Add your name against the ammo bill.
From the federal courts and Congress
On October 21, a unanimous panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the federal ban on interstate sale and transport of switchblades is unconstitutional, holding that switchblade knives are “Arms” under the Second Amendment. You can read the opinion here.
Meanwhile, 20 Democratic senators signed an October 16 letter pressing Attorney General Todd Blanche to go back to enforcing the federal ban on dealer handgun sales to adults aged 18 to 20, even though DOJ’s own lawyers have concluded that ban is unconstitutional. They asked for answers by November 16. A ban this flawed shouldn’t stay on the books at all. Congress should repeal it outright.
On October 19 the Supreme Court turned away the challenge to Maine’s 72 hour waiting period. Turning a case down is not a ruling on the law itself. The AR 15 ban cases are still set for argument on December 2.
Saturday, October 31, 3 p.m.: early voting ends (same day registration available).
Tuesday, November 3: Election Day.
Wednesday, December 2: Supreme Court argument in the AR 15 ban cases.
The North Carolina Firearms Coalition will keep watching for the SB 50 override vote.
