I’m worried.
The General Assembly reconvenes in Raleigh in less than a month and with major legislative battles on the horizon, I still haven’t received your membership renewal for 2023.
Christy, if you’ve mailed in your membership renewal forms or renewed online and our records have simply not caught up fast enough — then I hope you’ll forgive my mistake.
Gun owners across the state of North Carolina sent a message on election night when we booted Cheri Beasley to the curb and elected Ted Budd to replace Richard Burr.
The Republican candidates for the North Carolina Supreme Court were all victorious, stripping the majority away from the activist Democrats.
More than that, we won a veto-proof majority in the North Carolina State Senate and are only one seat away from a veto-proof majority in the North Carolina House of Representatives!
At the federal level, gun owners fired Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House and we took that chamber back from the radical left, limiting what Joe Biden can do in Congress.
Sure, it wasn’t a ‘Red Tsunami.’ Chuck Schumer still holds the Senate. But the days of ramming gun control bills through the House at warp speed are over…and that’s why I’m worried.
You see, with mass shooting events happening seemingly every day now, Joe Biden is ALREADY talking about using Executive Orders to advance his gun control agenda in 2023 and 2024; he knows that he can’t move them legislatively.
And until the North Carolina General Assembly passes Rep. Keith Kidwell’s Second Amendment Preservation Act (SAPA), we’ll have no protection from these unconstitutional mandates!
Worse, our own cops will be the ones who are ordered to enforce them on gun owners in North Carolina!
That’s why it’s crucial that we go ‘all in’ on passing SAPA legislation next session.
SAPA legislation is not complicated. It asserts our state sovereignty and tells the White House that North Carolina has its own Constitution, our own laws, and our own cops that are funded by our tax dollars — and it forces Biden to back off!
Specifically, SAPA orders North Carolina’s troopers, deputies, and municipal officers to ONLY enforce North Carolina laws when it comes to firearms, ammunition, and accessories.
Joe Biden can attack our freedoms with Executive Orders all he wants, but we damn sure don’t have to let our cops help him enforce them in North Carolina!
The simple fact of the matter is that Biden can’t enforce Executive Orders with federal agents, because they simply don’t have enough manpower.
Sadly, some North Carolina police chiefs will want to enforce federal gun control decrees. Mayors and Police chiefs in cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, and Asheville have been warring against our rights in the legislature for years.
So to make sure these politically motivated departments comply with the law, our SAPA legislation that we will be filing will carry civil penalties, allowing gun owners to take a rogue agency that violates SAPA law into court for civil damages!
This is the identical legislation that Missouri passed last year, and it’s already survived three court challenges there.
While this legislation didn’t pass here in Raleigh last year, nearly half of House Republicans cosponsored it. And that number is likely to grow with Joe Biden threatening more Executive Orders that will infringe on our right to keep and bear arms.
But this isn’t the only reason why I hope you’ll renew your membership for 2023.
I need your help to stop ‘Red Flag’ laws.
Last summer Joe Biden passed a massive gun control bill (thanks to Thom Tillis who helped broker the deal!) that gave the DOJ $750 million dollars to legally bribe states into passing ‘Red Flag Gun Confiscation’ into law!
Since liberal states have already enacted this legislation, Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland plan to flood Republican-legislature states like North Carolina with this money — hoping to start a domino effect.
It’s hard to even describe what would happen if North Carolina were to adopt ‘Red Flag’ laws in exchange for twenty, thirty, or maybe even fifty million dollars’ worth of ‘free’ money.
Depending on how the legislation is written, this bill would let virtually anyone claim that you’re ‘dangerous’ and ask a liberal judge to order the confiscation of your firearms before you’ve been charged or convicted of anything whatsoever!
That means that your embittered ex-spouse could disarm you.
Or maybe it’s a liberal neighbor, who hates the North Carolina Firearms Coalition bumper sticker you have on the back of your truck, who files this ‘complaint’ out of pure spite.
The point is that you’d never know who was trying to ruin your life with a ‘Red Flag’ complaint until the police were at your front door with a gun seizure order in hand!
Guilty until proven innocent… it’s madness.
But just because ‘Red Flag’ laws violate the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Amendments to the constitution doesn’t mean they won’t pass here in North Carolina — especially in the wake of a mass shooting and with Biden handing out tens of millions of dollars!
We need to stop it! But one more fight we need to be ready for is Constitutional Carry.
Twenty-five states now have it, including Tennessee and Georgia. It simply makes it so that lawful citizens are legal to carry a firearm without begging our increasingly-tyrannical government for permission.
If helping us fight for SAPA and defending against ‘Red Flag’ laws isn’t enough to get you to renew your support for 2023, just know that we have a real possibility to pass Constitutional Carry into law!
The obvious obstacle is Roy Cooper’s veto-pen: how can we pass Constitutional Carry if he’ll just veto the bill?
Here’s the deal. Senate Republicans hold a supermajority, and in the North Carolina House, Republicans are only one vote away from a veto-proof majority.
But contrary to popular belief, there are a couple of pro-gun Democrats left, like Representative Michael Ray, who have a history of voting pro-gun.
For example, Wray voted to repeal the pistol purchase permit and cosponsored Constitutional Carry and SAPA before – we just might have enough votes to get it done!
But whether we get Constitutional Carry over the finish line or not, we either win the policy or gun rights become a ballot issue statewide in the 2024 gubernatorial elections, and gun owners will get a chance to boot Cooper out of office!
As you can see, there’s a lot on the line next session.
And I wish I could say that NCFC is loaded for bear and ready for a fight next session. But after our expensive battle to expose Cheri Beasley and Bloomberg’s legislative candidates, we are dangerously low on funds right now.
